Planetside Next

The Eye Of Smed is turning its loving gaze back towards Planetside. It's not been clear what SOE is intending but it feels like they are planning to update the old Planetside and start work on a completely new one. Its quite clear that Smed really has a fondness for Planetside and an understanding of what made it great and what made it fail.

This is all good news because Planetside was a great game before the expansion wrecked it. Update the graphics, put in a massive number of unlocks, don't put in any Mechwarrior like things, and distill some goodness out of the things that made the game great -- you will have a winner. I got nothing against Mechwarrior, just wasn't right for Planetside.

It's hard to imagine that a simple update will pull people back in. To revive this game I believe its going to require the appearance of a sequel and a decent marketing push.
